Nose: Rich and characterful, opening with orange peel, dried apricot and ripe tropical fruit before developing darker notes of molasses, smoky oak, leather and tobacco. With time in the glass, the unmistakable Caroni character emerges—tar, hydrocarbons and warm spice.
Palate: Full-bodied and concentrated. Dried fruits and apricot mingle with molasses, vanilla and spicy oak, followed by leather, cigar box, burnt sugar and the oily, slightly industrial character for which Caroni has become famous.
Structure: Powerful but surprisingly approachable for Caroni. At 52% ABV, it delivers considerable intensity without becoming overwhelming, making the 15 Year Old an excellent introduction to the distillery’s distinctive heavy style.
Finish: Long, powerful and increasingly dry, with white pepper, molasses, smoky oak, leather and lingering hydrocarbon notes.
The Caroni 15 Year Old 1998 comes from one of rum's great lost distilleries. Caroni was historically renowned for its heavy molasses-based Trinidad rum and closed permanently in 2003. Remaining stocks subsequently became the foundation of Luca Gargano and Velier's celebrated Caroni releases.
This particular bottling is a vatting of 1998-vintage HTR (Heavy Trinidad Rum) casks. It spent its entire 15-year maturation period in Trinidad before being shipped to Scotland and bottled in November 2013.
Most remarkably, Velier reports an angel's share of approximately 70% during tropical maturation—illustrating just how concentrated the surviving spirit became.

There is another fascinating historical detail: Velier states that these 1998 barrels were among the last Caroni rums produced entirely from local Trinidad molasses, before local sugar-cane cultivation disappeared following the collapse of the Caroni sugar refinery and distillery.

Fully mature and ready to enjoy. As a distilled spirit, it will not meaningfully improve through further bottle aging, although properly stored unopened bottles can remain stable for decades.
Serve neat and allow 15–20 minutes in the glass. A few drops of still water can open additional fruit and spice while revealing more of Caroni's distinctive smoky, hydrocarbon character. Velier also suggests serving it neat or over one large cube of ice.
Best enjoyed as a contemplative sipping rum, particularly alongside 70–85% dark chocolate, chocolate truffles, roasted nuts, caramelized banana, coffee desserts, aged hard cheeses, or a fine cigar.
