Style Summary
The youngest expression in Velier’s celebrated 100% Trinidad Rum series, but already unmistakably Caroni. Distilled in 2000 and aged for 12 years entirely in Trinidad’s tropical climate, it was bottled in 2012 at 50% ABV / 100 Proof. Compared with the older Caroni releases, the 12 Year Old is fresher and more approachable, combining fruit, vanilla and spice with the distillery’s famous notes of rubber, tar, leather and hydrocarbons.

Nose: Initially fresher and fruitier than the older expressions, with pear, dried fruit, and dark cherry alongside vanilla and warm spice. As it opens, classic Caroni aromas emerge—rubber, leather, tar, tobacco and the distinctive “dirty workshop” character beloved by collectors.
Palate: Dry, firm and characterful. Vanilla, dried fruit and subtle sweetness are joined by licorice, pepper, leather and woody spice, followed by smoky notes of rubber, tar and hydrocarbons.
Structure: Full-bodied but comparatively accessible for Caroni. The 50% ABV provides plenty of intensity while allowing the fresher fruit and youthful distillery character to remain prominent.
Finish: Long and increasingly dry, with smoke, wood, spice, licorice, tar and lingering industrial notes.
The Caroni 12 Year Old represents an excellent entry point into one of the great cult names of Caribbean rum.
The rum was distilled in 2000, making it among the youngest Caroni stocks bottled by Luca Gargano's Velier. It was produced from molasses and column distilled before spending its entire maturation period in Trinidad.
Despite being the youngest of the principal 100% Trinidad Rum releases, tropical maturation was extremely intensive. Velier reports an extraordinary angel's share of approximately 60% during its 12 years in barrel.
The result is a fascinating contrast to the older Caronis: less dominated by long barrel maturation and consequently offering a clearer glimpse of the original heavy Caroni distillate.
Distilled: 2000
Bottled: 2012
Age: 12 Years
Strength: 50% ABV / 100 Proof
Maturation: 100% tropical
Angel's Share: Approximately 60%
Another historically important detail is that Velier identifies the 2000 stocks as among the last Caroni rums produced entirely from local Trinidad molasses, before local sugar-cane cultivation disappeared following the closure of the Caroni sugar operation.
Production records vary slightly by source, but Rum Auctioneer records 23,239 bottles for this release.
Drink now–2050+
Fully mature and ready to drink. As with the other Caroni releases, further bottle aging isn't required.
Serve neat and allow 10–15 minutes in the glass. At 50% ABV, it can comfortably be tasted neat, although a few drops of still water will reveal additional fruit, vanilla, and aromatic complexity.
Interestingly, Velier also notes that the relative freshness of the 12-year-old makes it suitable as the foundation for an exceptionally sophisticated rum cocktail.
Best enjoyed neat, but excellent alongside dark chocolate, chocolate truffles, caramelized banana, roasted pineapple, coffee desserts, toasted nuts, aged cheeses, or a fine cigar.
You now have what appears to be an extremely compelling Caroni sequence for The Tasting Room:
Caroni 12 Year Old 2000 — 50%
Caroni 15 Year Old 1998 — 52%
Caroni 17 Year Old 1998 — 55%
Caroni 18 Year Old 2000 Replica — 51.4%
Caroni 21 Year Old 1996 — 57.18%
Importantly, the 12, 15, 17, and 21-year-olds form the core quartet of Velier's 100% Trinidad Rum series.
That makes your collection much more interesting than five individual rare rums. For the website, I would merchandise them together as “Caroni – The Lost Distillery of Trinidad”, while still giving each bottle its own product page. It tells a fantastic collector story and makes buying several expressions much more tempting.
