CAPANNA BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO 2019

Style Summary

A beautifully structured, traditionally styled Brunello di Montalcino from Capanna's vineyards in the prestigious Montosoli area, north of Montalcino. The exceptional 2019 vintage combines ripe Sangiovese fruit with vibrant acidity, firm yet refined tannins and the savory, earthy complexity that defines classic Brunello.

This is a serious and age-worthy wine, showing red cherry, cranberry, dried flowers, herbs, licorice and mineral notes, with impressive freshness and a long, structured finish. The 2019 has received excellent critical acclaim, including 95 points from James Suckling and 95 points from Jeb Dunnuck.

Region / Grape / Style

Appellation: Brunello di Montalcino DOCG
Grape: 100% Sangiovese
Style: Dry, full-bodied, traditionally styled Tuscan red
Alcohol: 14.5%

Capanna is a historic family estate situated in Montosoli, one of the most celebrated sectors of Montalcino. The estate was founded by the Cencioni family in 1957, and Giuseppe Cencioni became one of the original founders of the Brunello di Montalcino Consorzio.

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Elegant and expressive, opening with ripe red cherry, redcurrant and cranberry, accompanied by dried rose petals and violet. With air, more complex notes of licorice, toasted rosemary, dried herbs, sandalwood and subtle earthy minerality emerge.

Palate:
Concentrated yet energetic, with fresh cherry, plum, cranberry and pomegranate framed by vivid acidity. Savory herbs, licorice and subtle oak spice add complexity, while the fruit remains remarkably fresh and focused.

Structure:
Medium to full-bodied with firm, finely sculpted tannins and vibrant acidity. This is a structured Brunello rather than an immediately soft style, but the components are beautifully balanced and suggest excellent potential for long-term development.

Finish:
Long and persistent, with lingering red fruit, dried herbs, green tea, almond and mineral nuances. The combination of freshness and tannic structure gives the finish excellent definition.

Summary

Capanna Brunello di Montalcino 2019 is an outstanding example of traditional Brunello from one of Montalcino's finest vintages.

The wine beautifully balances power and finesse: ripe enough to provide generous fruit, yet structured by the acidity, tannins and savory complexity that allow great Sangiovese to evolve for decades.

Critical reception has been consistently strong:

95 Points — Jeb Dunnuck
95 Points — James Suckling
94 Points — Wine Enthusiast
93 Points — Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
93 Points — Wine Spectator

For lovers of classic Brunello, the 2019 represents an excellent combination of vintage quality, traditional character and cellar potential.

Vintage Notes

2019 is widely regarded as an exceptional vintage for Brunello di Montalcino, producing wines with an enviable combination of ripeness, aromatic clarity, freshness and structure.

Capanna's interpretation reflects those qualities particularly well. The wine has ample concentration, but it is the vibrant acidity, refined tannins and freshness of the fruit that distinguish the vintage.

Wine Enthusiast awarded the wine 94 points, highlighting its combination of dried cherry, cranberry, floral character, citrus freshness and refined tannins.

Drinking Window

2027–2040+

The 2019 is still relatively youthful and structured. James Suckling recommends holding it until around 2027, while Wine Spectator suggests 2026–2040. Jeb Dunnuck expects it to enter its prime over the coming 10–15 years.

It can certainly be enjoyed now with 1–2 hours of decanting, particularly alongside food, but additional bottle age should reveal greater complexity—dried cherry, leather, tobacco, forest floor, truffle and balsamic herbs.

Food Pairing

An exceptional partner for Bistecca alla Fiorentina, roasted lamb, braised beef short rib, wild boar ragù, osso buco, porcini mushroom dishes and aged Pecorino Toscano.

Its combination of bright acidity and structured tannins makes it especially suited to rich, slow-cooked meats and traditional Tuscan cuisine.
