Tasting Profile

Nose: Intense aromas of black cherry, cassis and blackcurrant are layered with clove, violet, vanilla and subtle earthy notes. With air, darker nuances of plum, black truffle and warm spice emerge.

Palate: Rich, expansive and deeply concentrated, with ripe blackberry, black cherry and currant fruit filling the palate. The fruit is complemented by vanilla, dark chocolate, baking spice and beautifully integrated French oak.

Structure: Full-bodied and powerful, yet remarkably polished. Fine-grained tannins provide substantial structure without overwhelming the fruit, giving the wine both immediate richness and considerable aging potential.

Finish: Exceptionally long and persistent, with dark fruit, spice, vanilla and mineral-earthy nuances lingering well after each sip. Venge describes the finish as lasting for minutes.

Summary

The Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper Vineyard lies in Oakville, just north of Yountville, and has roots stretching back to the 19th century. The property eventually became part of historic Vine Hill Ranch before being acquired by Beckstoffer Vineyards in 1996. Today it is regarded as an important source of premium Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon.

For the 2019, Venge fermented the fruit using 100% native yeasts, with extended skin contact of 18–31 days. The wine was then matured for an unusually long 27 months in 100% new, tight-grained French oak and bottled unfiltered. Only around 220 cases were produced.

This is quintessential modern Napa Cabernet: opulent, concentrated and powerful, but with enough tannic precision and vineyard character to reward extended cellaring.

Vintage Notes

2019 was an excellent Napa Valley vintage, producing Cabernet with impressive concentration alongside freshness and structural balance. In Venge's expression, the vintage delivered particularly deep color, generous fruit and refined tannins.

The 2019 Venge Beckstoffer Missouri Hopper received 95 points from Jeb Dunnuck, while Wine Advocate assessed it at 93–95 points from barrel.

Drinking Window

2024–2039

Venge itself anticipates maturity from 2024 through 2039. It is already drinking beautifully for those who enjoy powerful young Napa Cabernet, although several more years of bottle age should allow the oak, tannins and concentrated black fruit to become increasingly integrated.

Recommended: Drink 2027–2038, with a long decant if opening before 2030.
