Iconic Spanish Red | Powerful, Polished, and Exceptionally Refined
Region: Ribera del Duero DO, Spain
Grape: 100% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo)
Producer: Bodegas Alión – Vega Sicilia
Style: Powerful, polished, modern, and beautifully age-worthy
Nose:
Deep, vibrant, and beautifully expressive, opening with layers of black cherry, blackberry, cassis, dark plum, violets, cedar, dark chocolate, espresso, graphite, and sweet spice. Aromas of fine oak, cocoa, crushed stone, and subtle floral lift emerge with aeration, delivering both richness and elegance. The 2021 vintage particularly emphasises freshness and aromatic purity.
Palate:
Rich and impeccably layered, revealing flavours of ripe black berries, dark cherry, plum, licorice, cocoa, espresso, spice, and mineral freshness. Luxurious yet remarkably energetic, the palate balances generosity with precision and freshness. Compared with warmer, more opulent vintages, the 2021 shows greater finesse, tension, and refinement, while still maintaining Alión’s signature richness.
Structure:
Full-bodied with fine, polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and exceptional balance. Matured for approximately 12–14 months in predominantly new French oak, Alión embraces a more modern and polished style than Vega Sicilia’s flagship wines, favouring purity, texture, and accessibility without sacrificing longevity. The 2021 vintage is already being recognised as one of the finest recent releases—showing remarkable elegance, freshness, and integration of oak. Critics have praised it for its silky tannins, freshness, and unusual finesse, with 96 points Robert Parker and 95 points James Suckling.
Finish:
Long, polished, and beautifully persistent, lingering with dark fruit, cocoa, cedar, spice, chalky minerality, and floral freshness. Elegant, seamless, and deeply satisfying.
Vega Sicilia Alión 2021 is one of the standout modern expressions of Ribera del Duero and among the finest recent vintages produced by the estate. Created by the legendary team behind Vega Sicilia, Alión was launched to offer a more contemporary interpretation of Tinto Fino (Tempranillo)—one that combines richness, purity, and modern precision while retaining the structure and seriousness expected of great Spanish wine.
The 2021 vintage proved particularly successful, producing a wine of freshness, balance, and remarkable harmony. Compared with richer and more solar vintages, the 2021 is more elegant, refined, and terroir-driven, with critics praising its restraint and seamless oak integration. Many consider it one of the best Alións in recent memory, beautifully balancing the generosity of Ribera del Duero with uncommon sophistication.
Already immensely impressive in youth, Alión 2021 will reward both early drinking and long-term cellaring.
The 2021 Ribera del Duero vintage delivered wines of outstanding freshness, aromatic precision, and balance. Cooler conditions and slower ripening allowed grapes to develop exceptional flavour complexity while preserving acidity and elegance. At Alión, the vintage produced a wine of silkiness, depth, and remarkable finesse, combining concentration with freshness in a particularly compelling way.
Now: Stunning with 1–2 hours decanting
