Super Tuscan | Refined, Vibrant, and Exceptionally Versatile
Region: Toscana IGT, Tuscany, Italy
Grape Blend: Approximately 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot
Producer: Tenuta San Guido (the estate behind Sassicaia)
Style: Elegant, polished, fruit-driven, and beautifully balanced
Nose:
Vibrant and beautifully expressive, opening with aromas of black cherry, cassis, ripe plum, blackberry, violets, cedar, sweet spice, tobacco leaf, and subtle Mediterranean herbs. Gentle notes of cocoa, graphite, and toasted oak emerge with aeration, adding depth and sophistication.
Palate:
Medium to full-bodied and beautifully layered, revealing flavours of blackcurrant, ripe cherry, plum, dark berries, licorice, cedar, spice, and earthy minerality. Rich and generous, yet remarkably fresh and energetic, the palate combines Tuscan warmth with Bordeaux-inspired precision. The 2022 vintage offers exceptional purity and immediate charm.
Structure:
Medium to full-bodied with fine, polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and seamless balance. Originally created to utilise younger vines and fruit not destined for Sassicaia, Guidalberto has evolved into one of Tuscany’s most respected wines in its own right. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot creates a wine with both structure and accessibility, while ageing in French oak adds refinement without overwhelming the fruit.
The 2022 vintage shows a particularly elegant profile, balancing ripe fruit with freshness and restraint despite warmer growing conditions.
Finish:
Long, polished, and beautifully persistent, lingering with dark berries, cedar, spice, tobacco, and mineral freshness. Elegant, harmonious, and highly drinkable.
Tenuta San Guido Guidalberto 2022 is one of Italy’s benchmark Super Tuscans, crafted by the legendary estate responsible for Sassicaia. First introduced in 2000, Guidalberto was designed to offer a more approachable and earlier-drinking expression of the estate’s philosophy, while still reflecting the quality and terroir of Bolgheri.
Compared with Sassicaia, Guidalberto tends to be more generous, fruit-forward, and approachable in youth, thanks to a higher proportion of Merlot, while still retaining structure, elegance, and ageing potential. It consistently overdelivers for its category and is widely regarded as one of Tuscany’s finest values in premium red wine.
The 2022 vintage delivers a beautifully polished and expressive wine, combining richness, freshness, and remarkable drinkability from an early stage.
The 2022 Tuscany vintage experienced warm and dry conditions, producing wines of concentration and ripeness. Careful vineyard management at Tenuta San Guido preserved freshness and balance, resulting in a Guidalberto of excellent aromatic intensity, harmony, and elegance.
