The Springbank 21-Year-Old XOP from Douglas Laing’s prestigious “Xtra Old Particular” series is a rare Campbeltown single malt distilled in 1995 and bottled in 2017 after two decades in a single refill hogshead. Bottled at its natural cask strength of 51.3% without chill filtration or added color, this limited release of just 308 bottles captures Springbank’s coastal essence with remarkable finesse. The nose opens with sea spray, gentle peat smoke, and honeyed barley, unfolding into creamy vanilla and apricot. The palate is rich and rounded, layered with custard sweetness, spiced ginger, white pepper, and nutmeg, balanced by malt depth and a faint whisper of smoke. The long, warming finish lingers with honey, oak, pepper, and delicate peat, while a touch of water reveals orchard fruits and softens the spice into a fruit-led finale. Elegant, nuanced, and deeply expressive, this 21-year-old is a true showcase of Springbank’s enduring craftsmanship and Douglas Laing’s careful cask selection.
