RIVELLA SERAFINO BARBARESCO 2006 – Piedmont

Mature Barbaresco | Elegant, Savoury, and Beautifully Evolved

Region: Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy
Grape: 100% Nebbiolo
Style: Elegant, savoury, mature, and classically structured

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Beautifully evolved and highly aromatic, opening with layers of dried rose petals, wild strawberry, sour cherry, dried cranberry, tobacco leaf, leather, forest floor, truffle, licorice, and sweet spice. Mature Nebbiolo complexity is beautifully expressed, with earthy undertones and delicate floral lift. Barbaresco is particularly known for aromas of rose, violet, cherry, truffle, fennel, and spice.

Palate:
Elegant and refined, revealing flavours of red cherry, dried raspberry, orange peel, tea leaf, leather, spice, dried herbs, and earthy minerality. The palate balances maturity with freshness, showing tertiary complexity while still retaining energy and vibrancy. Less forceful than Barolo, yet beautifully nuanced and expressive. Barbaresco is often described as more approachable and aromatic than neighbouring Barolo due to slightly earlier ripening and softer tannic structure.

Structure:
Medium-bodied with silky, resolved tannins, vibrant acidity, and remarkable finesse. The 2006 vintage in Piedmont is widely regarded as a strong, classical vintage for Nebbiolo, producing wines of freshness, structure, and longevity. At nearly two decades of age, this wine is entering a graceful phase of maturity while maintaining classical Nebbiolo tension and elegance.

Finish:
Long, savoury, and beautifully persistent, lingering with dried rose, red berries, tobacco, truffle, spice, and earthy complexity.

In Summary

Rivella Serafino Barbaresco 2006 represents a beautifully mature expression of Nebbiolo from Piedmont, showcasing the elegance and aromatic complexity for which Barbaresco DOCG is celebrated. Produced exclusively from Nebbiolo, Barbaresco is often considered the more refined and approachable counterpart to Barolo, offering perfume, finesse, and earlier accessibility while still maintaining excellent ageing potential.

The 2006 vintage in Piedmont delivered wines with classical structure, freshness, and outstanding ageing capacity. Now with significant bottle maturity, the wine is likely showing beautifully integrated tannins, tertiary complexity, and classic Nebbiolo character, making it particularly appealing for lovers of mature Italian wines.

Vintage Notes

The 2006 Piedmont vintage is regarded as an excellent year for Nebbiolo, producing wines with excellent balance, firm structure, and long ageing potential. Cooler conditions and a long growing season helped preserve acidity and aromatic complexity, resulting in wines that have aged particularly gracefully.
