Silky, refined, and deeply layered, revealing flavours of dried red berries, sour cherry, tobacco leaf, cedar, spice box, tea leaf, leather, dried herbs, and earthy minerality. The palate is savoury and beautifully nuanced rather than fruit-driven, balancing maturity with extraordinary freshness and precision. Ethereal and persistent, with remarkable harmony.
Structure:
Medium-bodied with silken tannins, vibrant acidity, and extraordinary balance. López de Heredia is famous for its uncompromisingly traditional ageing regime, with Viña Tondonia Reserva spending approximately 6 years in old American oak barrels, followed by extensive bottle ageing before release. The 1991 vintage has evolved into an extraordinarily elegant and tertiary expression while still retaining freshness and life. Traditional Rioja’s extended ageing often gives the wine an almost Burgundy-like finesse with mature complexity.
