An exceptionally rare and distinctive white Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Pure Blanc is Domaine La Barroche's ultimate expression of Clairette, one of the Rhône Valley's oldest indigenous white varieties. Produced entirely from a single parcel in the celebrated Les Pialons lieu-dit, it combines remarkable aromatic complexity with mineral tension, silky texture and extraordinary freshness. It is a white of finesse rather than weight—elegant, precise and built to evolve beautifully in bottle.
Region: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France
Appellation: Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC
Grape: 100% Clairette
Vineyard: Les Pialons
Soil: Fine marine sand and iron-rich red clay
Style: Richly textured yet mineral and refined Southern Rhône white
Ageing: On its lees in demi-muids; the domaine's current information indicates approximately 15 months of élevage.
Nose:
Beautifully expressive and refined, with white flowers, citrus blossom and delicate orchard fruits layered with fennel, star anise, fresh herbs and subtle spice. As the wine opens, more complex mineral and savoury nuances emerge.
Palate:
Silky and graceful, with impressive depth without heaviness. White peach, pear and citrus are complemented by delicate aniseed, fennel and floral notes. The fruit is carried by a pronounced mineral freshness that gives the wine energy and precision.
Structure:
Textured and rounded yet never heavy or overly rich. Clairette's natural delicacy combines with the sandy, iron-rich terroir to create a particularly fine mouthfeel, while vibrant freshness and mineral tension provide definition. The domaine describes Pure Blanc as simultaneously round and energetic—a combination central to the wine's character.
Finish:
Long, mineral and beautifully persistent, leaving delicate impressions of citrus, white flowers, fennel, star anise and fine saline spice.
Pure Blanc represents Julien Barrot's long-held ambition to create a truly exceptional white Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
After returning to the family domaine in 2002, Julien spent approximately 15 years studying the terroir and developing his approach before creating Pure Blanc. The wine comes exclusively from Les Pialons, where very fine marine-origin sand and iron-rich red clay provide the vines with an unusual combination of water availability and mineral complexity.
The choice of 100% Clairette is equally significant. One of the historic white grapes of the Southern Rhône, Clairette has been cultivated in the region for centuries. In Pure Blanc, it produces a wine of remarkable delicacy and aromatic complexity rather than the richness often associated with white Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
Produced in extremely limited quantities, Pure Blanc is a compelling expression of the domaine's philosophy: purity, elegance, freshness and terroir above all else.
The domaine has not yet published a dedicated technical sheet for the 2024 Pure Blanc, so detailed vintage-specific production figures and critic reviews remain limited. The estate's current Pure Blanc information confirms the established philosophy of 100% Clairette from Les Pialons, with élevage on the lees in demi-muids.
The style is expected to emphasize the qualities that make this cuvée distinctive: floral perfume, mineral purity, freshness, subtle Mediterranean spice and a fine, silky texture.
2026–2038
Beautiful in its youth for its freshness and aromatic purity, but Pure Blanc has the concentration and structure to reward careful cellaring. With age, expect its floral and citrus character to develop toward honey, dried flowers, beeswax, toasted nuts and complex savoury spice.
For drinking young, the domaine recommends decanting before serving; previous technical guidance suggests at least 30 minutes and a serving temperature around 12°C.
Exceptional with seared scallops, grilled lobster, roasted turbot, Dover sole, Mediterranean sea bass, crab, roast chicken with herbs, veal, truffle risotto and creamy mushroom dishes.
Its combination of richness and mineral freshness also makes it an excellent partner for lobster beurre blanc, scallops with cauliflower purée, roast poultry with morels, or aged Comté and Alpine cheeses.
