A serious, barrel-fermented Chardonnay from the Langhe, Memundis combines the richness and texture associated with fine Chardonnay with the freshness and mineral character of Piedmont. Produced in limited quantities from mature vines, it is a distinctive Italian alternative for drinkers who enjoy premium white Burgundy or other complex, oak-aged Chardonnays. Agricola Marrone
Region: Langhe DOC, Piedmont, Italy
Producer: Agricola Gian Piero Marrone
Grape: 100% Chardonnay
Vintage: 2023
Style: Dry, full-bodied, barrel-fermented white
Alcohol: 14% ABV Agricola Marrone
Nose: Expressive aromas of ripe citrus, white fig and acacia are layered with honey, bitter almond, sweet spice and a delicate touch of vanilla.
Palate: Rich and generous, yet beautifully balanced by freshness. Ripe orchard and citrus fruit meet creamy barrel-derived texture, subtle spice and a distinctive mineral backbone.
Structure: Full and textured without becoming heavy. The wine's freshness provides lift and definition, while barrel fermentation gives additional depth and complexity.
Finish: Long, vibrant and persistent, with citrus, almond, mineral and gently toasted notes lingering on the palate. Agricola Marrone
The Chardonnay comes from vineyards planted in 1978 at approximately 350 metres elevation, with a south-west exposure. The soils are predominantly calcareous, with quartz sand, fine limestone and layers of grey sandstone. Agricola Marrone
The grapes are hand-harvested and cooled before pressing to preserve their aromatic character. Both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation take place in Austrian and French barriques, followed by extended bâtonnage. This gives Memundis its creamy texture and depth while retaining the freshness that defines the wine. Agricola Marrone
The 2023 shows Memundis in a particularly appealing style: concentrated and textural, but with enough acidity and mineral tension to keep the wine precise. Expect the youthful fruit and oak integration to become increasingly harmonious with a little bottle age.
Drink now–2031
Enjoy now for its combination of ripe fruit, freshness and barrel complexity, or cellar for several years as the wine develops more honeyed, nutty and savoury nuances.
Excellent with grilled lobster, scallops, roasted grouper, buttery seafood, poultry, veal, mushroom risotto and creamy pasta dishes. The producer also specifically recommends grilled fish and white meats, as the wine has enough structure to handle richer preparations. Agricola Marrone
For lovers of rich, sophisticated Chardonnay who want to look beyond Burgundy. Memundis is one of the more unusual expressions of Chardonnay from Piedmont: generous and luxurious in texture, yet unmistakably Italian in its freshness and mineral drive. A particularly good bottle for the table rather than simply an aperitif.
