MARRONE BAROLO BUSSIA DOCG 2021

Style Summary

A prestigious single-MGA Barolo from Bussia in Monforte d’Alba, one of the most historically important and celebrated crus of the entire Barolo appellation. Marrone’s Bussia is produced from 100% Nebbiolo and represents a more terroir-focused expression than the estate’s multi-vineyard Barolo bottlings.

Bussia is renowned for producing Barolo with power, depth and longevity, but also remarkable aromatic complexity. In the outstanding 2021 vintage, the combination is particularly compelling: concentrated red fruit, rose and violet are layered with sweet spice, licorice, tobacco and balsamic notes, supported by authoritative yet refined Nebbiolo tannins.

Region / Grape / Style

Producer: Agricola Gian Piero Marrone
Region: Barolo DOCG, Piedmont, Italy
MGA / Cru: Bussia
Commune: Monforte d’Alba
Grape: 100% Nebbiolo
Vintage: 2021
Vineyard Altitude: Approximately 300 meters
Exposure: Southwest
Soils: Calcareous clay marl with sandstone
Harvest: Hand-Harvested
Style: Powerful · Structured · Complex · Long-Lived

Marrone’s vines in Bussia benefit from the combination of calcareous marl, clay and sandstone characteristic of this sector of Monforte. These soils, together with the favorable exposure, help Nebbiolo develop considerable structure while retaining the acidity and aromatic precision required for extended aging.

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Deep and beautifully layered, beginning with red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry, followed by rose petals and violet. With air, the wine becomes increasingly complex, revealing licorice, tobacco, cinnamon, clove and balsamic herbs, with subtle earthy and mineral nuances underneath.

Palate:
Powerful yet remarkably composed. Ripe cherry and red berries provide the initial fruit before more savory notes of dried flowers, spice, licorice and earth emerge. There is considerable concentration, but the wine remains energetic rather than heavy.

Structure:
Full-bodied and firmly structured, with bright acidity and substantial fine-grained tannins. Bussia’s characteristic power is evident, but the tannins have impressive precision and refinement, particularly in the balanced 2021 vintage.

Finish:
Very long and persistent, with lingering cherry, dried rose, licorice, tobacco and sweet spice, gradually becoming more savory and mineral as the wine fades.

The Bussia Cru

Bussia is one of the great historic names of Barolo.

Located in Monforte d’Alba, it is also one of the appellation’s largest MGAs, encompassing several different exposures and elevations. Despite this diversity, Bussia is broadly associated with Barolo of impressive structure, aromatic complexity and longevity.

For wine lovers familiar with Burgundy, thinking of Bussia as a vineyard designation rather than simply a brand name is helpful. The name identifies the geographical origin of the Nebbiolo and distinguishes this wine from Marrone’s broader Barolo blends.

The personality is typically more structured than the softer, more perfumed wines associated with La Morra, while retaining considerably more elegance than the word “powerful” might suggest.

Vintage Notes – 2021

2021 is an excellent vintage for serious Barolo, particularly wines intended for long-term cellaring.

The vintage produced Nebbiolo with a compelling combination of concentration, aromatic precision, acidity and ripe tannins. Rather than simply producing massive wines, the best 2021s show impressive balance between fruit intensity and freshness.

That makes the vintage especially exciting for Bussia, where the natural structure of the terroir benefits from a year capable of delivering both concentration and finesse.

This is a vintage I would be very comfortable buying for the cellar.

Summary

Marrone Barolo Bussia 2021 is a serious, terroir-driven Barolo that showcases the more powerful and structured side of Nebbiolo.

Compared with Marrone’s regular Barolo 2021, Bussia offers greater vineyard specificity, concentration and aging potential. Compared with Pichemej 2021, which blends fruit from La Morra and Monforte to combine elegance with power, Bussia provides a purer expression of Monforte d’Alba and the Bussia MGA.

Expect red cherry, wild berries, rose and violet in youth, gradually developing into the classic mature-Barolo spectrum of truffle, dried flowers, tobacco, leather, licorice and forest floor.

For customers building a Piedmont cellar, I would position this as one of the more serious bottles in the Marrone range: a Barolo to buy now, enjoy selectively over the next few years, but ideally allow to mature.

Drinking Window

2028–2050+

The 2021 is still extremely young. While it can be enjoyed now with sufficient aeration, I would ideally cellar it until at least 2028–2030 before opening the first bottles.

If drinking young, decant for approximately 2–3 hours and serve around 18°C.

From 2030–2040, I expect it to enter a particularly exciting phase, with its youthful red fruit beginning to integrate with dried rose, tobacco, licorice and truffle.

Well-stored bottles should continue developing beautifully into the 2040s and potentially beyond 2050.

Food Pairing

The structure of Bussia calls for substantial dishes with enough richness to soften Nebbiolo’s tannins.

Classic choices include Brasato al Barolo, braised beef short rib, roast lamb, venison and wild boar. Its earthy and floral complexity also makes it exceptional with porcini mushrooms and white truffle.

For a quintessential Piedmontese experience, pair it with Tajarin al Tartufo Bianco or slow-braised beef.

PAIR WITH:
Brasato al Barolo · Braised Beef Short Rib · Roast Lamb · Venison · Wild Boar · Porcini Risotto · White Truffle Tajarin · Castelmagno

For your website selection, I think having Marrone Barolo 2021, Pichemej 2021, and Bussia 2021 side by side is excellent: the standard Barolo introduces the house style, Pichemej represents the family’s flagship selection, while Bussia gives the customer a true single-cru expression of Monforte terroir.
