MARRONE BAROLO DOCG 2021

Style Summary

A beautifully structured and traditionally expressive Barolo from 100% Nebbiolo, Marrone Barolo 2021 combines fruit from Castiglione Falletto and La Morra, bringing together two complementary expressions of the Langhe.

The wine marries the structure and savory depth associated with Castiglione Falletto with the perfume and elegance of La Morra. The result is a classic Barolo: red berries, cherry, rose and violet layered with spice, earth, licorice and tobacco, supported by fine but persistent Nebbiolo tannins and excellent ageing potential.

Region / Grape / Style

Producer: Agricola Gian Piero Marrone
Region: Barolo DOCG, Piedmont, Italy
Grape: 100% Nebbiolo – principally Lampia and Michet
Vintage: 2021
Vineyards: Castiglione Falletto & La Morra
Altitude: Approximately 300–350 metres
Harvest: Hand-Harvested
Winemaker: Valentina Marrone
Style: Structured · Perfumed · Elegant · Age-Worthy

In Castiglione Falletto, the vineyards sit around 350 metres on clay marl with a high percentage of sand, while the La Morra vineyards are around 300 metres on pale clay and calcareous soils.

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Complex and quintessentially Nebbiolo, opening with wild strawberry, raspberry and cherry, followed by rose and violet. With air, layers of cinnamon, black pepper, nutmeg and vanilla emerge alongside more savory notes of licorice, tobacco, leather and earthy underbrush. These characteristics closely reflect Marrone's own aromatic profile for the wine.

Palate:
Elegant yet authoritative, with bright red cherry and wild berries at the core. The fruit is framed by savory earth, dried flowers and warming spice, with the wine gradually becoming deeper and more complex as it opens.

Structure:
Full-bodied but refined, with fresh acidity and abundant, fine-grained tannins. The structure is unmistakably Barolo, but the tannins are more polished than aggressive, giving the wine impressive balance between power and finesse.

Finish:
Long, dry and persistent, with lingering tart cherry, dried rose, spice, earth and subtle truffle, carried by fine chalk-like tannins. A published tasting note on Marrone's site similarly emphasizes earthy mushroom, sous-bois, tart cherry and truffle characteristics with very fine but persistent tannins.

Winemaking

Marrone begins with careful selection in the vineyard followed by further selection during crushing.

Fermentation takes place at approximately 28°C for 30 days, giving the Nebbiolo sufficient extraction to develop the structure required for long ageing. Malolactic fermentation and maturation involve both large 30-hectolitre barrels and barriques, with bâtonnage on the fine lees for approximately eight months. Bottling takes place under nitrogen to minimize oxidation.

This combination of traditional large-format wood and smaller barrels gives the wine depth and polish while allowing Nebbiolo's perfume and terroir to remain clearly recognizable.

Vintage Notes – 2021

2021 is an especially compelling vintage for Barolo, producing wines that generally combine concentration and structure with freshness and aromatic precision.

For Marrone's style, this makes the vintage particularly attractive: there is enough fruit and concentration to support the substantial Nebbiolo tannins, but also sufficient freshness to maintain elegance and provide a long evolution in bottle.

This is a vintage I would be very comfortable cellaring.

Summary

Marrone Barolo 2021 is a classic expression of the appellation—structured, aromatic and built for the cellar, yet sufficiently polished to begin enjoying relatively young with appropriate decanting.

The combination of fruit from Castiglione Falletto and La Morra is particularly important. Rather than emphasizing one commune, Marrone creates a broader expression of Barolo, combining structure and savory complexity with perfume and elegance.

Expect classic Nebbiolo characteristics of cherry, wild strawberry, rose and violet, gradually developing into truffle, dried flowers, tobacco, leather and forest floor as the wine matures.

For customers wanting a traditional Barolo experience without moving into the higher pricing of single-vineyard bottlings, Marrone Barolo 2021 is an excellent introduction to the estate.

Drinking Window

2026–2043+

The wine can certainly be enjoyed now, but it is still youthful. For drinking in 2026–2029, I would give it approximately 90 minutes to 2 hours in a decanter.

From around 2030–2038, I expect the wine to enter a particularly attractive phase, with the primary red fruit beginning to integrate with dried rose, truffle, tobacco and earthy tertiary characteristics.

Well-stored bottles should comfortably continue developing beyond 2040.

Food Pairing

Barolo's combination of tannin, acidity and aromatic complexity makes it exceptional with dishes containing slow-cooked meat, mushrooms, truffle and aged cheese.

A classic pairing would be Brasato al Barolo, while roast lamb, braised short rib, wild mushroom risotto and truffle pasta would all work beautifully.

For cheese, choose something mature and savory such as Parmigiano Reggiano or Castelmagno.

PAIR WITH:
Brasato al Barolo · Braised Beef Short Rib · Roast Lamb · Game · Porcini Risotto · Truffle Pasta · Castelmagno · Aged Parmigiano Reggiano
