MARRONE BARBARESCO DOCG 2023

Style Summary

An elegant and classically styled Barbaresco from 100% Nebbiolo, produced by the Marrone family from vineyards planted on the white calcareous-clay soils of the Langhe.

The 2023 vintage is particularly attractive for its combination of freshness, aromatic purity and refined tannins. Marrone reports that Nebbiolo handled the challenging growing season exceptionally well, producing wines with excellent freshness, silky tannins and graceful ageing potential.

Region / Grape / Style

Producer: Agricola Gian Piero Marrone
Region: Barbaresco DOCG, Piedmont, Italy
Grape: 100% Nebbiolo
Vintage: 2023
Vineyard Altitude: Approximately 380 meters
Soils: White Calcareous Clay
Harvest: Hand-Harvested
Style: Elegant, Structured & Traditionally Styled Barbaresco

Marrone's Nebbiolo grows on south-facing calcareous-clay soils, rich in calcium carbonate. The estate credits these soils with helping give the wine its characteristic freshness, longevity, elegance and personality.

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Elegant and complex, opening with raspberry, wild strawberry and red-cherry preserves, followed by violet and floral notes. With air, more savory nuances emerge—green pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, dried herbs, toasted hazelnut, anise and subtle vanilla. These characteristics reflect Marrone's own profile for its Barbaresco.

Palate:
Refined and beautifully structured, with vibrant red fruit supported by fresh acidity and fine-grained Nebbiolo tannins. Cherry and raspberry are joined by dried flowers, spice and subtle earthy notes, while the 2023 vintage lends the wine an appealing sense of energy and precision.

Structure:
Medium to full-bodied with fresh acidity and polished yet persistent tannins. Marrone gives the wine an extended 25-day skin maceration before maturation in wood, building structure without sacrificing the elegance expected of Barbaresco.

Finish:
Long and graceful, with lingering red berries, violet, anise, warm spice and subtle earthy notes, finishing fresh and finely tannic.

Winemaking

The grapes are gently destemmed and crushed before undergoing approximately 25 days of maceration at 28–30°C. Marrone uses a combination of larger 30-hectolitre barrels and barriques during fermentation and maturation, followed by extended ageing in wood.

Vintage Notes – 2023

The 2023 growing season presented Piedmont's growers with considerable challenges. A cool, rainy spring increased disease pressure, while July brought heat, humidity and localized storms. Conditions improved later in the season, and favorable temperature variation during September and October helped Nebbiolo achieve excellent phenolic maturity.

Marrone characterizes the resulting 2023 Barolo and Barbaresco wines as balanced and refined, with excellent freshness and silky tannins, suggesting a vintage built more around elegance and harmony than sheer power.

Summary

Marrone Barbaresco 2023 captures the graceful side of Nebbiolo—perfumed, fresh and finely structured, with beautiful red fruit, floral aromatics and layers of spice and savory complexity.

While Barolo often emphasizes power and longevity, this Barbaresco offers a more immediately elegant expression, with the silky tannins and aromatic lift of the 2023 vintage making it particularly appealing even in its youth.

It is a classic Piedmontese wine with enough structure for the cellar, but sufficient finesse to enjoy relatively early with food.

Drinking Window

2026–2040

Enjoy from 2026–2030 for its vibrant red fruit, florals and youthful freshness. From 2030 onward, expect greater development of dried rose, leather, truffle, tobacco and earthy Nebbiolo complexity.

Decanting for approximately 60–90 minutes is recommended when drinking young.

Food Pairing

Nebbiolo's combination of acidity, aromatic complexity and tannin makes this particularly beautiful with rich meat dishes, mushrooms and aged cheeses.

Excellent with braised beef, veal, roast lamb, duck, porcini mushroom risotto or truffle pasta. For a classic Piedmontese pairing, serve with tajarin with white truffle or slow-braised beef.

PAIR WITH:
Braised Beef · Veal · Roast Lamb · Duck · Porcini Risotto · Truffle Pasta · Aged Parmigiano Reggiano
