Cru: Sarmassa – Barolo, Piemonte
The 2010 Barolo Sarmassa from Marchesi di Barolo is a benchmark expression of one of Barolo’s most prized crus and one of the most celebrated vintages of the decade. Sarmassa—known for its compact clay-limestone soils and excellent south/south-east exposure—yields wines of power, structure, and finesse. The 2010 rendition perfectly reflects the classic elegance of the vintage, showcasing depth, purity, and remarkable aging potential.
A beautifully layered bouquet of dried roses, violets, and tar, classic markers of top Nebbiolo. Red-fruited precision emerges with maraschino cherry, wild strawberry, and red currant, supported by undertones of licorice, tobacco leaf, forest floor, and crushed stone minerality. With aeration, hints of truffle, cedar, and sweet spice unfold.
Elegant yet firmly structured. The wine opens with vibrant red fruit—sour cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate—before broadening into deeper notes of leather, anise, and dried herbs. The tannins are fine but authoritative, reflecting Sarmassa’s muscular style, while the 2010 vintage adds impeccable balance and freshness. A core of minerality and savory complexity runs through the mid-palate.
Long, refined, and persistent. Dried rose petals, tobacco, spice box, and red berries linger alongside polished tannins and vibrant acidity. A finish that continues to evolve in the glass.
This is a classic, noble Barolo—structured yet graceful, expressive yet restrained. The 2010 vintage’s purity and tension are fully on display, making this Sarmassa a superb bottle for both current enjoyment (with ample decanting) and continued cellar aging. Ideal for refined pairings such as braised short rib, truffle risotto, or aged Parmigiano Reggiano.
