Historic Cru Barolo | Elegant, Aromatic, and Beautifully Mature
Region: Barolo DOCG, Piedmont, Italy
Cru: La Serra, La Morra
Grape: 100% Nebbiolo
Producer: Marcarini
Style: Traditional, refined, perfumed, and exceptionally age-worthy
Nose:
Beautifully evolved and intensely aromatic, opening with classic aromas of dried rose petals, red cherry, wild strawberry, orange peel, tobacco leaf, cedar, truffle, leather, and sweet spice. With time in the glass, layers of forest floor, balsamic herbs, tar, and earthy minerality emerge, creating remarkable complexity and elegance. The La Serra vineyard is renowned for producing particularly fragrant and lifted expressions of Barolo.
Palate:
Silky, refined, and beautifully balanced, revealing flavours of red cherry, dried cranberry, plum, licorice, tobacco, leather, and savoury herbs. Unlike the more powerful and muscular Barolos of neighbouring communes, La Serra is known for its finesse and aromatic charm, delivering a wine of grace and precision rather than sheer power. The maturity of the 2006 vintage adds layers of tertiary complexity while preserving freshness and structure.
Structure:
Medium to full-bodied with resolved tannins, vibrant acidity, and exceptional balance. Situated at approximately 380 metres above sea level, the La Serra vineyard enjoys excellent exposure and ventilation, producing wines noted for their elegance, perfume, and longevity. Marcarini remains one of Barolo's most respected traditional producers, crafting wines that faithfully express the character of their historic crus.
Finish:
Long, savoury, and beautifully persistent, lingering with notes of dried flowers, red fruits, tobacco, truffle, spice, and mineral freshness. Graceful, complex, and unmistakably Barolo.
Marcarini La Serra Barolo 2006 is a superb example of traditional Barolo from one of La Morra's most historic estates. Marcarini has been producing wine in the Langhe since the 1850s and was among the first producers to bottle and identify individual cru vineyards such as La Serra and Brunate.
The 2006 vintage is widely regarded as one of the great classic vintages of Barolo, producing wines with outstanding structure, aromatic complexity, and ageing potential. Today, the wine is entering a magnificent stage of maturity, where the primary fruit has evolved into a tapestry of savoury, floral, and earthy nuances while still retaining the freshness that makes great Nebbiolo so captivating.
For lovers of traditional Barolo, this is a wine that beautifully captures the elegance and nobility of La Morra.
The 2006 Barolo vintage delivered wines of remarkable balance, structure, and longevity.
