DOMAINE LEFLAIVE MEURSAULT 1ER CRU “CHARMES” 2023

Style Summary

A rare and highly desirable Premier Cru white Burgundy from one of the most revered names in Chardonnay, Domaine Leflaive Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 2023 combines the natural richness of Meursault with the precision, energy and mineral definition that characterize Domaine Leflaive.

Sourced from the celebrated Les Charmes Premier Cru, the 2023 is layered with ripe citrus, white peach, pear and orchard fruit, complemented by white flowers, toasted hazelnut, delicate spice and mineral complexity. The palate is generous and beautifully textured yet driven by fresh acidity, giving the wine remarkable balance and persistence.

This is a serious, cellar-worthy white Burgundy that should become increasingly complex over the next decade and beyond.

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Elegant and layered, beginning with white peach, ripe pear, lemon and citrus blossom, followed by white flowers and subtle orchard fruit. As the wine opens, more complex nuances of hazelnut, almond, delicate toast and wet stone begin to emerge.

Palate:
Rich and beautifully textured, with ripe citrus, pear and white peach providing the fruit core. There is the generosity expected of Meursault Charmes, but the wine retains impressive tension and precision, with fresh acidity carrying the fruit across the palate.

Structure:
Medium- to full-bodied, concentrated and finely balanced. The natural richness of Charmes is countered by vibrant acidity and a strong mineral backbone, creating a wine that feels substantial without becoming heavy.

Finish:
Long and increasingly mineral, with lingering citrus, orchard fruit, toasted hazelnut, delicate spice and saline minerality.

The Charmes Premier Cru

Les Charmes is one of Meursault's most celebrated Premier Cru vineyards, situated toward the southern side of the appellation near Puligny-Montrachet.

The vineyard is renowned for producing Chardonnay with a compelling combination of richness, breadth and elegance. Charmes typically possesses more generosity than many neighboring sites while retaining sufficient minerality and acidity to produce wines capable of substantial bottle ageing.

The name is particularly appropriate: Charmes is associated with the historic presence of hornbeam trees, although for wine lovers the vineyard has become synonymous with some of the most seductive expressions of Meursault.

In the hands of Domaine Leflaive, that naturally generous terroir is interpreted with an emphasis on purity, precision and energy.

Domaine Leflaive

Few names carry greater prestige in white Burgundy than Domaine Leflaive.

Based in Puligny-Montrachet, the domaine is particularly famous for its extraordinary holdings in vineyards including Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet Premier Crus.

Under the late Anne-Claude Leflaive, the estate also became one of Burgundy's pioneering advocates of biodynamic viticulture. The philosophy remains central to the domaine's identity today, with the objective of producing wines that communicate their vineyard origins as transparently as possible.

The result is a style prized for its combination of concentration, freshness, mineral definition and longevity.

Vintage Notes – 2023

The 2023 Burgundy vintage produced generous yields after the considerably smaller harvests of some preceding years.

For Chardonnay, the best producers were able to achieve an attractive balance between ripe fruit, concentration and freshness. Careful vineyard management and harvest timing were particularly important in retaining acidity and avoiding excessive ripeness.

For a naturally rich terroir such as Meursault Charmes, that freshness is especially valuable. The resulting wine combines the vineyard's characteristic breadth with the tension and precision required for long-term development.

At this stage, the 2023 remains extremely youthful. The primary fruit and oak influence should gradually integrate, revealing substantially greater mineral, nutty and savory complexity with bottle age.

Summary

Domaine Leflaive Meursault 1er Cru Charmes 2023 brings together two exceptional names in white Burgundy: Domaine Leflaive and Meursault Charmes.

The wine combines the vineyard's natural generosity with Leflaive's characteristic precision. Expect white peach, pear and citrus, gradually developing into toasted hazelnut, almond, mineral and subtle savory notes.

While already impressive, this is a Chardonnay I would strongly encourage customers to cellar rather than drink immediately. The real attraction will come as its youthful fruit and structure begin to integrate and the more complex characteristics of mature white Burgundy emerge.

For collectors of fine Chardonnay, this is an important bottle: a prestigious Premier Cru from one of Burgundy's benchmark white-wine domaines with genuine long-term potential.

Drinking Window

2028–2043+

The 2023 is still very young, and I would ideally allow at least 4–5 years of bottle age before opening the first bottles.

From approximately 2029–2038, I would expect the wine to enter a particularly compelling phase, with youthful citrus and orchard fruit evolving toward hazelnut, almond, brioche, beeswax and more pronounced mineral complexity.

If opening young, serve around 11–13°C and allow the wine time to develop in a large Burgundy glass. I would avoid serving it excessively cold.

Food Pairing

A wine of this richness and complexity deserves refined dishes that complement rather than overwhelm it.

It is exceptional with lobster, Dover sole, turbot, scallops and roast chicken, particularly when accompanied by butter-based sauces. The wine's mineral freshness also makes it excellent with simply prepared premium seafood.

As it matures and develops more nutty and earthy characteristics, morel mushrooms and aged Comté become particularly compelling partners.

For an elegant pairing, I would choose Dover Sole Meunière or butter-poached lobster.

PAIR WITH:
Dover Sole Meunière · Butter-Poached Lobster · Turbot · Seared Scallops · Roast Chicken · Morel Mushrooms · Aged Comté
