CHÂTEAU CALON SÉGUR 2000 – Saint-Estèphe

Iconic Saint-Estèphe Bordeaux | Classical, Powerful, and Beautifully Mature

Region: Saint-Estèphe, Bordeaux, France
Classification: Troisième Cru Classé (Third Growth, 1855 Classification)
Grape Blend: Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot
Style: Classical, structured, savoury, and exceptionally age-worthy

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Deep, brooding, and beautifully complex, opening with aromas of blackcurrant, cedar, cigar box, graphite, tobacco leaf, dried herbs, forest floor, truffle, and crushed gravel, complemented by subtle earthy spice and Pauillac-like pencil shaving character. Mature tertiary notes are beginning to emerge while retaining freshness and depth.

Palate:
Refined and beautifully structured, revealing layers of black cherry, cassis, bitter cherry, cedar, espresso, licorice, tobacco, and mineral-driven graphite notes. The palate combines mature complexity with freshness and precision, offering classical Saint-Estèphe power rather than overt opulence. Firm tannins have softened beautifully with age while maintaining excellent structure.

Structure:
Medium to full-bodied with remarkable freshness, fine tannic grip, and classic Left Bank structure. The 2000 vintage produced one of the estate’s standout modern wines, balancing concentration with restraint and longevity. Frequently described as deeply Saint-Estèphe in personality, the wine is now entering a superb phase of maturity while retaining years of evolution ahead.

Finish:
Long, savoury, and persistent, lingering with bitter cherry, cedar, tobacco, graphite, truffle, and earthy mineral freshness. Refined, noble, and beautifully classical in style.

In Summary

Château Calon Ségur 2000 is widely regarded as one of the château’s benchmark mature vintages and a brilliant expression of classic Saint-Estèphe. Famous for the heart on its label and the legendary saying:

“I make wine at Lafite and Latour, but my heart is at Calon Ségur.”

the estate has long been admired for producing wines of authenticity, longevity, and aristocratic restraint.

The 2000 Bordeaux vintage is considered one of the great modern vintages, delivering wines of concentration, balance, and exceptional ageing potential. At Calon Ségur, the result was a wine of brooding power, mineral depth, and classical refinement, earning praise for its remarkable evolution and longevity. Critics have described it as a wine that may even surpass the château’s highly regarded 2005 vintage.

Today, the wine sits in a beautiful drinking window, offering mature complexity while retaining freshness and structure.
