KRUG ROSÉ BRUT CHAMPAGNE

Style Summary

One of Champagne's most distinctive and gastronomic rosés, Krug Rosé combines the complexity and depth associated with the House of Krug with the structure of traditionally macerated Pinot Noir.

Rather than simply producing a more fruit-driven interpretation of Champagne, Krug created Rosé to behave almost like a fine red Burgundy at the table—combining red fruit, spice and structure with Champagne's freshness, minerality and exceptionally fine mousse.

Complex, vinous and remarkably versatile with food.

The Story of Krug Rosé

Krug Rosé is surprisingly recent in the history of the House.

In 1976, brothers Rémi and Henri Krug began exploring the idea of creating a rosé Champagne unlike those already available.

Their objective was not simply to create a pink version of Krug Grande Cuvée.

Instead, they wanted a Champagne capable of combining finesse and freshness with the structure, spice and gastronomic possibilities normally associated with red wine.

After several years of experimentation, the first Krug Rosé was presented in 1983.

Today, a new Édition is created each year.

The Art of the Blend

Krug Rosé is constructed from an extensive selection of individually vinified wines from different vineyards, grape varieties and years.

Reserve wines from Krug's extensive library contribute maturity and complexity.

What gives Krug Rosé its particularly distinctive character, however, is the addition of a relatively small proportion of traditionally macerated Pinot Noir red wine.

This provides colour, but more importantly adds structure, spice and vinous depth.

The result is a Champagne that can move beyond traditional aperitif pairings and accompany an entire meal.

Tasting Profile

Appearance:
Salmon pink to copper, depending upon the Édition and bottle age, with an exceptionally fine and persistent mousse.

Nose:
Raspberry, wild strawberry and red cherry are joined by blood orange, dried fruit and floral notes. With air, deeper aromas of pastry, brioche, toasted nuts and spice emerge.

Palate:
Layered and vinous. Red berries and citrus are balanced by pastry, toast and subtle spice, with an exceptionally fine mousse and impressive underlying structure.

Structure:
Medium to full-bodied for Champagne, with considerable concentration, fresh acidity and a distinctive Pinot Noir-derived structure.

Finish:
Long and complex, moving between red fruit, citrus, pastry, spice and a subtle bitter note reminiscent of pink grapefruit.

Summary

Krug Rosé is not simply a prestige rosé Champagne—it is a gastronomic wine.

The House combines Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier from different vineyards and vintages with reserve wines from its extensive library.

A small proportion of traditionally macerated red Pinot Noir gives the wine its colour while contributing additional structure and spice.

The result combines the freshness and precision of Champagne with a vinous depth that allows Krug Rosé to accompany dishes normally considered beyond the territory of sparkling wine.

Red berries, blood orange, pastry, toast and spice combine with fine mousse, fresh acidity and a remarkably persistent finish.

It is simultaneously elegant and powerful.

Édition & Bottle Age

Every bottle of Krug Rosé belongs to a specific Édition.

This is important.

Unlike a conventional non-vintage Champagne produced to maintain essentially the same blend from year to year, each Krug Rosé Édition is a new composition built around a particular harvest and complemented by reserve wines from previous years.

The exact assemblage can therefore vary significantly between Éditions.

Older Éditions can also develop considerably in bottle, moving from fresh red fruit and citrus toward increasingly complex notes of dried strawberry, orange peel, hazelnut, brioche, spice and toasted pastry.

For this reason, the Krug iD printed on the bottle should be used for precise drinking and cellaring recommendations.

Drinking Window

Drink: Now–15+ Years Depending on Édition
Preferred Window: Dependent on Krug iD / Édition

Krug Rosé is exceptional in that it can be thoroughly enjoyable when relatively young while also developing beautifully with bottle age.

Young bottles emphasize raspberry, strawberry, cherry, blood orange, freshness and spice.

With additional age, the Champagne becomes increasingly vinous and complex, developing notes of dried red fruit, candied citrus, brioche, pastry, toasted nuts and savoury spice.

Unlike many rosé Champagnes, there is absolutely no requirement to drink Krug Rosé young.

Well-stored bottles from strong Éditions can evolve for many years.

Serving Temperature: 10–12°C

Do not serve excessively cold.

A traditional narrow Champagne flute restricts the wine considerably. Serve in a large tulip Champagne glass or white Burgundy glass to allow its aromatic complexity to develop.

Allowing the wine several minutes in the glass after pouring is highly recommended.

Food Pairing

Krug Rosé is one of the rare Champagnes capable of moving comfortably from seafood through poultry and even into game and red meat.

Recommended Pairings:
Imperial Gold Osetra Caviar · Tuna Tataki · Salmon · Grilled Lobster · Langoustines · Grilled Sardines · Duck Breast · Peking Duck · Quail · Roast Pigeon · Veal · Lamb · Venison · Wild Boar · Charcuterie · Truffle · Spiced Mediterranean & Middle Eastern Dishes

The Tasting Room Recommendation

This is a Champagne I would encourage guests to drink with food rather than reserve solely for an aperitif.

For something classic, pair it with Osetra caviar, lobster or tuna.

For a more memorable pairing, move toward duck breast, quail or even venison. The Pinot Noir-derived structure and spice allow Krug Rosé to accompany dishes that would overwhelm most rosé Champagnes.

Serve at approximately 11°C in a Burgundy-style glass and allow the wine to evolve throughout dinner.

For a serious Champagne enthusiast, Krug Rosé is particularly compelling because it occupies an unusual position between prestige Champagne and a gastronomic red wine—combining the complexity of a great multi-vintage Champagne with sufficient structure to accompany an exceptionally broad range of dishes.
