Tasting Profile

Nose:
Intensely aromatic and beautifully complex, opening with aromas of ripe cherry, wild blackberry, dried rose petals, violets, Mediterranean herbs, tobacco leaf, leather, cedar, and sweet spice. As the wine evolves in the glass, notes of truffle, forest floor, balsamic herbs, and earthy minerality emerge, adding depth and sophistication.

Palate:
Full-bodied and beautifully layered, revealing flavours of dark cherry, plum, blackberry, licorice, tobacco, leather, spice, and savoury herbs. Rich and concentrated, yet balanced by vibrant acidity and classic Sangiovese freshness. The palate combines power with elegance, showcasing the traditional character for which Il Poggione is renowned.

Structure:
Firm, refined tannins and lively acidity provide the backbone for long-term ageing. Il Poggione is one of Montalcino's most historic and respected estates, known for producing Brunello in a traditional style that emphasises terroir, balance, and longevity. The 2017 vintage offers impressive concentration and structure while remaining approachable with decanting.

Finish:
Long, savoury, and beautifully persistent, lingering with notes of dark cherry, dried herbs, tobacco, leather, spice, and mineral freshness. Complex, elegant, and unmistakably Brunello.

In Summary

Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino 2017 is a benchmark expression from one of Montalcino's most respected producers. Founded in the late 19th century, Il Poggione has earned a reputation for crafting Brunellos that combine traditional winemaking with remarkable consistency and ageing potential.

The 2017 vintage was marked by a warm and dry growing season, resulting in lower yields but highly concentrated fruit. Skilled vineyard management allowed Il Poggione to preserve freshness and balance, producing a Brunello that displays both richness and classical structure. While more generous and approachable than cooler vintages such as 2016, the wine retains the elegance and longevity expected of great Brunello.

Already highly enjoyable with decanting, this wine will continue to evolve beautifully over the coming decade and beyond.

Vintage Notes

The 2017 Tuscany vintage experienced significant heat and drought during the growing season, producing wines of concentration, ripe fruit, and impressive intensity. In Montalcino, the best producers successfully maintained freshness and balance through careful vineyard management, resulting in wines with richness, structure, and excellent ageing potential.
