A polished, contemporary Super Tuscan from Gaja’s Ca’ Marcanda estate, Promis 2023 combines Merlot, Syrah, and Sangiovese into a generous yet fresh Mediterranean red. It delivers the refinement expected from Gaja while remaining approachable and versatile enough for the dinner table.
Region: Tuscany, Italy
Appellation: Toscana IGT
Estate: Ca’ Marcanda – Gaja
Blend: 55% Merlot • 35% Syrah • 10% Sangiovese
Style: Dry, medium-to-full-bodied red
Alcohol: Approximately 14% ABV
Nose: An expressive combination of red cherry, blackberry and violet, developing into black pepper, clove, Mediterranean herbs, licorice and subtle roasted-coffee notes.
Palate: Juicy and beautifully composed, with ripe red and dark fruit wrapped around supple, fine-grained tannins. Syrah contributes spice and depth, Merlot gives the wine its generous texture, while Sangiovese adds freshness and lift.
Structure: Medium-to-full-bodied with excellent balance. Plenty of concentration, but the 2023 retains attractive freshness and a slightly saline quality that keeps it from feeling heavy.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering red fruit, spice, mineral notes and a subtle smoky character.
The three grape varieties are vinified separately, allowing each to retain its individual character before blending. Promis is then matured for approximately 12 months in oak barriques, followed by additional bottle aging before release.
The 2023 growing season in Tuscany brought a wet winter and spring, followed by a much hotter, drier July and August. Cooler September nights helped preserve acidity and aromatic freshness. The resulting wines show good natural acidity, moderate richness, balanced structure, and supple tannins—qualities particularly well suited to the approachable style of Promis.
Drink now–2033
Promis is deliberately enjoyable young, when its fruit and spice are most vibrant, but the combination of acidity, tannin, and Gaja's precise winemaking should allow it to develop gracefully over the medium term.
An extremely versatile food wine. Excellent with beef carpaccio, grilled steak, lamb chops, veal, wild mushroom risotto, fresh pasta with ragù, roast chicken and aged cheeses.
Serve at approximately 16–18°C.
A superb introduction to the Tuscan side of Gaja. Promis has enough pedigree and complexity for the serious wine drinker, yet its supple tannins, vibrant fruit, and Mediterranean character make it immediately enjoyable.
For The Tasting Room, I particularly like this as a premium wine-by-the-glass candidate. It carries the GAJA name, is recognizable to knowledgeable guests, and is considerably more approachable in price than the flagship Gaja wines—making it a very effective step-up glass or Coravin selection.
