The Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grow on Ca’ Marcanda’s distinctive terre bianche soils, characterized by limestone, compact clay, and stones.
Nose: Deep and sophisticated, opening with blackcurrant, blackberry, black cherry and raspberry, followed by violet, Mediterranean herbs, graphite, licorice, cocoa and subtle spice.
Palate: Concentrated and powerful, yet beautifully controlled. Dark and red fruits are layered with mineral and savory elements. Fine, polished tannins provide structure, while vibrant acidity brings freshness and definition to the wine’s considerable richness.
Structure: Full-bodied and densely structured, yet elegant rather than heavy. It displays the classic Bolgheri combination of ripe Mediterranean fruit, Cabernet structure, and coastal freshness.
Finish: Exceptionally long and refined, with lingering black fruit, graphite, herbs, spice, and a distinctive saline-mineral character.
The name Ca’ Marcanda comes from a Piedmontese expression meaning approximately “the house of endless negotiations,” referring to the lengthy negotiations Angelo Gaja undertook before purchasing the property in 1996.
For Camarcanda, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc are vinified separately to preserve the individual character of each variety. The wine undergoes extended maturation before blending, allowing the powerful fruit, tannins and oak to integrate while retaining freshness and precision.
2021 is an outstanding vintage for Camarcanda. The combination of concentration, ripe fruit, freshness and beautifully integrated tannins has produced a wine with both immediate sophistication and considerable aging potential.
The vintage has received exceptional critical recognition, with several leading international wine critics awarding 97-point scores.
2027–2046+
While already impressive, Camarcanda 2021 remains youthful and will benefit significantly from further bottle development. Over time, the primary dark fruit should evolve toward more complex notes of cedar, tobacco, leather, dried herbs, and earth.
If drinking young, decant for approximately 1½–2 hours and serve at 16–18°C.
Excellent with prime ribeye, filet of beef, rack of lamb, braised short ribs, venison, wild boar, truffle dishes, mushroom risotto and mature Pecorino.
