DOMAINE POULLEAU VOLNAY 2023

Style Summary

An elegant and finely structured village Volnay from Domaine Poulleau, emphasizing Pinot Noir's floral character, red fruit, and fine tannins rather than weight or extraction.

The 2023 Volnay shows cherry and raspberry alongside violet, subtle spice, and restrained earthy notes. The palate is supple and relatively generous, with fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins leading to a long, clean finish.

Approachable now, but likely to become more interesting with several years of bottle age.

Volnay

Situated in the Côte de Beaune between Pommard and Meursault, Volnay is particularly associated with Pinot Noir of perfume, finesse and fine tannic structure.

Domaine Poulleau has been based in Volnay since Michel Poulleau established the estate in 1960.

Today the family farms approximately eight hectares across several Côte de Beaune appellations, with red wine representing the large majority of production.

The domaine's approach emphasizes hand harvesting, careful fruit selection and restrained use of oak, with the intention of preserving the individual character of each vineyard.

Summary

Domaine Poulleau Volnay 2023 represents a clear step up in finesse from the domaine's broader regional Pinot Noir bottlings.

Made entirely from Pinot Noir, it combines the attractive fruit of the 2023 vintage with the floral aromatics and fine tannins associated with Volnay.

Cherry and raspberry dominate in youth, accompanied by violet, spice, and subtle earthy notes.

The palate has sufficient concentration to provide substance, but the wine remains controlled and elegant rather than heavy.

This is a village Burgundy that can be enjoyed relatively young but should gain additional complexity with several years in the bottle.

Vintage Notes

The 2023 vintage produced relatively generous Pinot Noir in the Côte de Beaune, with good fruit maturity and generally approachable tannins.

That character suits Volnay particularly well.

The Domaine Poulleau 2023 is already expressive, with ripe red fruit and floral aromatics supported by fine tannins and fresh acidity.

The vintage's fruit generosity makes the wine approachable in youth, while the underlying structure provides sufficient potential for medium-term development.

Drinking Window

Drink: Now–2037
Preferred Window: 2027–2034

The 2023 can be enjoyed now, but it remains youthful.

Opened today, the emphasis will be on cherry, raspberry, violet, and fresh Pinot Noir fruit, accompanied by fine tannins and subtle spice.

If you enjoy young Burgundy for its fruit and freshness, there is no need to wait.

However, I would expect another two to four years in the bottle to improve integration and allow more of Volnay's secondary character to emerge.

From approximately 2027 onward, expect the primary fruit to gradually be joined by dried flowers, tea leaf, forest floor, mushroom, and savory spice.

Well-stored bottles should continue to develop through the early to mid-2030s.

Serving Temperature: 15–16°C

If opening now, allow approximately 30–45 minutes in the bottle or a large Burgundy glass. Aggressive decanting is unnecessary.

In practical terms: drink now for fresh fruit and floral character; hold another 2–4 years for greater integration and savory complexity.

Food Pairing

The wine's red fruit, acidity and fine tannins make it particularly suitable for poultry and lighter meat preparations.

Recommended Pairings:
Duck Breast · Roast Duck · Quail · Roast Chicken · Veal · Lamb · Beef Tenderloin · Game Birds · Mushroom Risotto · Porcini · Comté · Époisses

The Tasting Room Recommendation

Pair with duck breast, quail, or roast chicken with mushrooms.

The wine's raspberry and cherry character complements poultry particularly well, while its acidity and fine tannins provide sufficient structure for veal, lamb or simply prepared beef tenderloin.

Mushroom and truffle dishes should become increasingly interesting as the wine develops additional bottle age.

Within the Domaine Poulleau Range

Compared with the wines we have just covered:

Les Mondes Rondes 2024 — lighter, fresher and intended primarily for early drinking.

Beaune Les Prévoles 2023 — old-vine concentration, slightly broader fruit and more structure.

Volnay 2023 — greater emphasis on perfume, finesse and fine tannins.

For a guest wanting to understand the classic elegance of Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir, the Volnay is a particularly useful step within the Domaine Poulleau range.
