A refined, concentrated and distinctly mineral single-vineyard Sancerre from one of the most celebrated lieux-dits of Bué.
The 2023 Chêne Marchand shows a deeper and more sophisticated expression of Sauvignon Blanc, combining ripe citrus and orchard fruit with apricot, delicate white flowers, almond and pronounced limestone minerality.
Generous in texture yet beautifully precise, this is serious Sancerre—complex, mineral and built for the dining table.

Chêne Marchand is an historic vineyard situated on the limestone plateau above Bué, one of Sancerre's most important wine-growing villages.
The vineyard's shallow, stone-filled limestone soils provide excellent drainage and give Sauvignon Blanc a particularly concentrated, precise, and mineral expression.
Nose:
Complex and expressive, opening with lemon, grapefruit and ripe orchard fruit before revealing apricot, white peach and delicate floral notes.
With air, subtler nuances of almond, herbs, and crushed limestone emerge.
Palate:
Concentrated and beautifully textured. Ripe citrus, pear and stone fruit are balanced by vibrant acidity and a pronounced mineral core.
The fruit is impressively generous, but the wine stays focused and precise throughout.
Structure:
Medium-bodied with excellent concentration and tension. The ripe fruit provides richness through the center of the palate, while limestone-driven freshness gives the wine definition and energy.
Finish:
Long and persistent, with citrus, almond and ripe orchard fruit gradually giving way to a distinctly mineral, subtly saline finish.
Chêne Marchand is one of the great historic vineyard sites of Sancerre and one of the most important individual parcels cultivated by Domaine Merlin-Cherrier.
The domaine owns less than one hectare in the vineyard, naturally limiting production.
Its defining feature is the abundance of caillottes—small limestone stones covering the vineyard's shallow soils.
These conditions produce Sauvignon Blanc with exceptional purity and mineral definition, while the favorable exposure encourages excellent fruit maturity.
The 2023 Chêne Marchand beautifully captures this contrast: generous and ripe through the center of the palate, yet precise, energetic, and distinctly mineral on the finish.
This is not simply refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. It is a terroir-driven Sancerre with genuine depth and personality.
The 2023 vintage gives Chêne Marchand an attractive combination of fruit concentration and freshness.
Ripe citrus, pear, apricot, and stone fruit dominate the youthful profile, accompanied by delicate floral and herbal nuances.
The palate is generous and supple, but Chêne Marchand's limestone soils provide the mineral tension and acidity necessary to keep the wine beautifully balanced.
Now beginning to settle into itself, the 2023 should become increasingly interesting as its youthful fruit develops into more complex savory and mineral characteristics.
Drink now – 2033
The 2023 is already expressive, particularly with some time in the glass, but this is a Sancerre capable of rewarding several years of bottle age.
Over time, expect the youthful citrus, pear and apricot characteristics to evolve toward preserved lemon, almond, beeswax, dried flowers and increasingly pronounced mineral notes.
Serving Temperature: 10–12°C
Avoid serving excessively cold. Around 11–12°C allows the wine's texture, aromatics, and limestone character to become considerably more expressive.
For drinking now, open the bottle 20–30 minutes before serving.
Chêne Marchand has enough concentration and mineral structure to accompany considerably more than simple aperitif dishes.
Excellent with:
Oysters · Caviar · Scallops · Langoustines · Lobster · Crab · Turbot · Dover Sole · Sea Bass · Sushi · Ceviche · Asparagus · Goat Cheese · Roast Chicken
Pair with seared scallops, grilled langoustines, or roasted turbot.
The wine's ripe fruit and concentration complement the richness of the seafood, while its limestone acidity and mineral finish provide freshness and precision.
For a classic Loire pairing, serve with Crottin de Chavignol or another fine goat cheese.
For something particularly elegant, try Osetra caviar. Chêne Marchand's combination of citrus freshness, limestone minerality and subtle salinity makes it an excellent partner.
Within the Merlin-Cherrier range, I would position Chêne Marchand as the more precise and mineral single-vineyard expression, while Grand Chemarin offers greater breadth, texture and richness. They would make an excellent side-by-side Sancerre tasting.
