DOMAINE GEORGES LIGNIER & FILS CHARMES-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU 2024

Style Summary

A rare and beautifully structured Grand Cru Burgundy, combining the seductive fruit and perfume associated with Charmes-Chambertin with impressive mineral tension and serious aging potential.

The 2024 is a refined expression of Pinot Noir, with red cherry, raspberry and wild berries layered with violet, subtle spice and earthy complexity. Fine but firm tannins and fresh acidity give the wine excellent definition, while old vines contribute concentration and remarkable persistence.

Elegant in its youth but built for patience, this Grand Cru should become increasingly complex over many years in bottle.

Charmes-Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the celebrated Grand Cru appellations of Gevrey-Chambertin, immediately south of Chambertin and its neighboring Grands Crus.

Domaine Georges Lignier & Fils works with a tiny parcel of mature Pinot Noir vines planted in the early 1960s.

The combination of old vines and limestone-rich terroir produces naturally concentrated fruit while retaining the mineral character and freshness required for long aging.

Winemaking

The wine is matured in small Burgundy barrels, with approximately 50% new French oak.

At this level, the concentration of the old-vine fruit has sufficient depth to absorb the élevage, with the oak contributing structure and subtle spice rather than dominating the Pinot Noir.

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Red cherry, raspberry and wild strawberry with violet, rose petal, subtle spice and gentle earthy notes.

Palate:
Concentrated yet refined, with ripe red fruit supported by vibrant acidity and pronounced mineral tension. The texture is elegant, with fine but youthful tannins providing considerable structure.

Structure:
Medium to full-bodied by Burgundy standards, with excellent concentration, fresh acidity, and finely structured tannins.

Finish:
Long and precise, with lingering red berries, flowers, spice and stony minerality.

Summary

Domaine Georges Lignier & Fils Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2024 is a rare, old-vine expression of one of the great Grand Cru appellations of Gevrey-Chambertin.

While Charmes-Chambertin is often associated with sensuality and generous fruit, the Georges Lignier interpretation brings an additional element of tension, structure, and minerality.

This is serious Grand Cru Burgundy that deserves time in the cellar.

Red Cherry · Raspberry · Wild Strawberry · Violet · Rose Petal · Spice · Earth · Stony Minerality

Drinking Window

Drink: 2029–2048+
Preferred Window: 2032–2045

The 2024 is very young, so I recommend patience.

Although it can be tasted earlier for its youthful fruit and energy, the wine's firm tannins and mineral structure suggest that several years of bottle aging will be particularly rewarding.

From around 2030–2032, expect the fruit, tannin and oak to become increasingly integrated, revealing greater aromatic and savory complexity.

With bottle age, expect:

Dried Cherry · Rose Petal · Tea Leaf · Forest Floor · Mushroom · Truffle · Savoury Spice

If opening young, let it breathe for about 60 minutes in the glass or open bottle, allowing the wine to unfold gradually rather than aggressively decanting.

Well-stored bottles should continue developing beautifully throughout the 2030s and 2040s.

Serving Temperature: 16–17°C

Food Pairing

Recommended Pairings:
Duck Breast · Pigeon · Guinea Fowl · Veal · Lamb · Beef · Venison · Wild Game · Porcini · Morels · Black Truffle · Époisses · Aged Comté

The Tasting Room Recommendation

A bottle for the serious Burgundy collector.

The combination of Grand Cru terroir, old Pinot Noir vines, and extremely limited production makes this one to cellar rather than rush to open.

Charmes-Chambertin often shows a more seductive and perfumed personality than the powerful Clos de la Roche, but Georges Lignier's version retains impressive structure and mineral tension.

Ideally, cellar the 2024 for several years, then pair it with roast pigeon, duck breast with morels, or venison with black truffle.

Serve at approximately 16°C in a large Burgundy glass.
