DOMAINE LA BARROCHE “JULIEN BARROT” CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE ROUGE 2023 375 ML

Style Summary

The signature wine of Domaine La Barroche, the 2023 Julien Barrot captures the essence of this historic family estate and its remarkable collection of old-vine parcels across northern Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Led by Grenache from vines averaging 65 years old—with almost half of the Grenache vines around a century old—it is a beautifully perfumed, silky and sophisticated expression of the appellation, combining generous fruit with freshness, fine tannins and remarkable elegance.

Region: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France
Appellation: Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC
Grapes: 61% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 11% Syrah, 7% Counoise, 5% Cinsault, 1% other traditional varieties
Vine Age: Average 65 years; almost 50% century-old Grenache
Style: Medium to full-bodied, perfumed and elegant Southern Rhône red
Ageing: 19 months in old oak foudres, 600-litre barrels and concrete tanks

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Beautifully aromatic, with wild strawberry, raspberry and ripe cherry joined by fresh violet, rose petal, mint, dried Provençal herbs and subtle spice. With air, deeper notes of cocoa, liquorice and earth emerge.

Palate:
Silky and concentrated, with layers of ripe red and black fruits carried by an energetic line of freshness. Grenache provides generous cherry and raspberry fruit, while Mourvèdre and Syrah contribute darker fruit, savoury spice and structure. Floral and herbal nuances keep the wine lifted and refined.

Structure:
Medium to full-bodied with polished tannins and a bright acidic backbone. There is impressive concentration without excessive weight, giving the wine the combination of richness, freshness and finesse that has become a hallmark of Julien Barrot's winemaking.

Finish:
Long and beautifully composed, with lingering red berries, violet, dried herbs, cocoa and fine peppery spice.

Summary

Julien Barrot is the signature cuvée of Domaine La Barroche, created to express the breadth of the family's finest terroirs and Julien Barrot's philosophy as a winegrower.

The fruit comes from several exceptional parcels across Châteauneuf-du-Pape, including Palestor, Bois Dauphin, Grand Pierre, Rayas, Pointu, Cabrières, Boursan and Pied Long. The vineyards are predominantly situated on red clay and sandy soils, with the domaine's remarkable old Grenache vines forming the heart of the blend.

Harvesting is entirely by hand, followed by meticulous selection. Fermentation takes place in tulip-shaped concrete tanks with maceration exceeding four weeks and deliberately gentle extraction. The wine then matures for 19 months in a combination of old foudres, demi-muids and concrete, allowing the character of the fruit and terroir to remain centre stage.

The result is quintessential La Barroche: deep and generous yet wonderfully elegant, floral and fresh—a sophisticated interpretation of Châteauneuf-du-Pape built around exceptional old-vine Grenache.

Vintage Notes

2023 is an especially attractive vintage at Domaine La Barroche. The domaine describes the wines as pure, perfumed and juicy, with excellent balance and polished tannins. Warm days combined with cooler September nights helped preserve freshness and aromatic definition, while gentle extraction in the cellar emphasized the vintage's natural perfume.

The reds show particularly appealing red and black-fruit complexity and are expected to provide considerable pleasure relatively young while retaining the ageing potential associated with Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Drinking Window

2026–2038

The 2023 is already inviting thanks to its polished tannins and aromatic character, but several years in bottle should bring additional harmony and complexity. The domaine recommends decanting for at least 30 minutes and serving between 16–18°C.

With maturity, expect the vibrant strawberry, cherry and floral notes to develop toward dried fruits, leather, cocoa, liquorice, garrigue and savoury spice.

Food Pairing

Excellent with côte de boeuf, roasted rack of lamb with rosemary, duck breast, slow-braised beef, venison, daube Provençale, wild mushrooms and aged Comté or other hard cheeses.

Its combination of richness and freshness makes it particularly compelling with herb-crusted lamb, grilled ribeye with jus, slow-cooked beef cheeks or duck with cherry and rosemary.
