Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux, France — Grand Cru Classé de Graves
Style Summary
A refined, classically structured Left Bank Bordeaux from one of Pessac-Léognan’s benchmark estates. The 2014 vintage combines ripe black fruit, graphite-like minerality, and polished tannins with the freshness and precision that defined the vintage.
Region: Pessac-Léognan, Bordeaux, France
Blend: 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot
Style: Full-bodied, structured, mineral-driven Bordeaux red
Aging: 18 months in French oak barrels, approximately 60% new oak
Nose
Expressive aromas of cassis, wild blackberry, and dark cherry unfold into licorice, black pepper, cinnamon, and subtle smoky, flinty notes.
Palate
Concentrated yet energetic, with ripe black and red fruits framed by fresh acidity and finely structured tannins. The wine has impressive tension and balance rather than excessive weight.
Structure
Full-bodied and composed, with firm but polished tannins, vibrant acidity and the characteristic gravelly minerality of Pessac-Léognan.
Finish
Long and persistent, carrying cassis, blackberry, licorice, spice and a distinctive gunflint mineral character.
The 2014 Château Smith Haut Lafitte is an elegant, sophisticated expression of the estate: Cabernet-led, mineral and beautifully proportioned. It has enough maturity now to show secondary complexity while retaining excellent freshness and structure.
2014 was ultimately rescued by an exceptional September and October Indian summer after a cooler, more challenging growing season. The prolonged fine weather allowed the estate to harvest patiently at optimal ripeness, producing wines with concentration, freshness, and particularly strong aromatic definition.
Now–2035+
Already very enjoyable with decanting, but well-stored bottles should continue developing beautifully over the next decade.
Excellent with dry-aged beef, filet mignon, roast lamb, duck breast, braised short ribs, venison, or aged hard cheeses. Its smoky mineral character also works particularly well with grilled meats and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffle.
The château's technical sheet records strong contemporary critical reviews, including 96 points from James Suckling and Wine Enthusiast, 95 from Jeff Leve, and 94 from Wine Spectator, Vinous, and Decanter.
