CHÂTEAU LYNCH-BAGES 2009 – Pauillac

Legendary Pauillac | Powerful, Opulent, and Exceptionally Age-Worthy

Region: Pauillac, Bordeaux, France
Classification: Cinquième Cru Classé (1855 Classification)
Grape Blend: Approximately 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot
Style: Powerful, structured, richly concentrated, and profoundly classic Pauillac

Tasting Profile

Nose:
Deep, dramatic, and intensely aromatic, opening with layers of blackcurrant, cassis, blackberry, graphite, cigar box, cedar, tobacco leaf, smoke, mint, and crushed gravel, beautifully framed by Pauillac’s signature lead-pencil character. The 2009 vintage offers remarkable richness and aromatic intensity.

Palate:
Full-bodied, rich, and beautifully layered, revealing concentrated flavours of blackcurrant, plum, dark cherry, cedar, espresso, cocoa, licorice, and spice, supported by exceptional fruit purity and remarkable depth. Despite its scale and power, the wine remains beautifully balanced and refined.

Structure:
Full-bodied with massive concentration, velvety tannins, vibrant freshness, and extraordinary ageing potential. Château Lynch-Bages is known for producing muscular, structured Pauillac, and the 2009 vintage is widely regarded as one of the greatest ever produced by the estate. Robert Parker described it as the finest Lynch-Bages since the legendary 1989 and 1990 vintages.

Finish:
Exceptionally long, powerful, and persistent, lingering with cassis, graphite, cedar, spice, tobacco, and mineral freshness for over a minute. Monumental and deeply satisfying.

In Summary

Château Lynch-Bages 2009 stands among the great modern expressions of Pauillac and is frequently cited as one of the finest wines ever made at the estate. Though officially a Fifth Growth (Cinquième Cru Classé), Lynch-Bages has long been considered a “Super Fifth”, consistently performing at a level closer to the Second Growths and often rivaling some of Bordeaux’s elite estates.

The 2009 Bordeaux vintage delivered near-perfect ripening conditions, producing wines of extraordinary richness, concentration, and balance. At Lynch-Bages, the result was a wine of exceptional opulence and structure, earning 98 points from Robert Parker and Jeb Dunnuck, along with widespread critical acclaim. Many critics regard it as one of the benchmark wines of the vintage.

Now entering an extraordinary drinking phase, the wine is beginning to reveal secondary complexity while still retaining enormous youthful energy and decades of life ahead.
