Nose:
Deep, dramatic, and profoundly expressive, opening with layers of blackcurrant, blackberry liqueur, blueberry compote, incense, graphite, exotic spice, cedar, tobacco, licorice, and rose petal, framed by subtle smoky undertones and Asian spices. The hallmark incense-like perfume of Cos d’Estournel is beautifully present.
Palate:
Luxuriously rich and intensely concentrated, showing waves of cassis, kirsch, blackberry, plum compote, dark chocolate, spice, espresso, and crushed stone minerality. Despite its immense scale, the wine remains remarkably balanced, combining opulence with freshness and extraordinary precision.
Structure:
Full-bodied with velvety tannins, extraordinary concentration, and exceptional balance. Monumental yet refined, the 2009 possesses immense power while remaining seamless and elegant. Frequently described as one of the greatest wines ever produced at Cos d’Estournel, it is often regarded as a “Super Second” capable of rivaling First Growth Bordeaux.
Finish:
Exceptionally long, layered, and persistent, lingering with black fruit, graphite, incense, licorice, spice, and mineral freshness for well over a minute. A truly grand finish worthy of one of Bordeaux’s great modern wines.
