Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2012 represents the pinnacle of traditional Rioja winemaking. Produced exclusively from the historic La Plana vineyard, planted in 1950 at the highest point of the Ygay Estate, it is crafted only in vintages deemed worthy of the estate's flagship label. Combining immense concentration with remarkable finesse, it is already captivating but promises to evolve beautifully for decades.
The grapes are sourced exclusively from the 40-hectare La Plana vineyard in Rioja Alta. Following manual harvesting and meticulous selection, each variety is fermented separately in stainless steel. The Tempranillo is matured for 34 months in American oak barrels, while the Mazuelo spends 34 months in French oak. After blending, the wine rests for a further 20 months in concrete tanks before bottling, allowing the components to integrate seamlessly while preserving freshness and elegance.
Drink: Now–2055+
Although already magnificent after extended ageing at the winery, the 2012 has the balance, concentration and structure to continue developing for another three decades or more under ideal cellaring conditions.
An exceptional wine deserving equally exceptional cuisine:
