Nose
Exceptionally refined and endlessly complex, revealing layers of preserved lemon, quince, dried chamomile, verbena tea and white flowers. As it evolves in the glass, aromas of wild mushrooms, toasted hazelnuts, beeswax, honey, brioche and delicate spice emerge alongside distinctive flinty mineral notes.
Palate
Powerful yet remarkably elegant, combining extraordinary concentration with laser-like acidity. Flavours of preserved citrus, baked apple, quince, nectarine and honey unfold alongside toasted almonds, brioche, wet stone and subtle savoury umami notes. Despite nearly three decades of ageing before release, the wine possesses astonishing vitality, precision and balance.
Structure
Finish
Incredibly long and seamless, lingering with notes of citrus oil, honey, toasted brioche, white truffle, crushed stone and a profound saline, umami character that seems almost endless.
Castillo Ygay Blanco Gran Reserva Especial 1986 is one of the rarest and most celebrated white wines ever produced in Spain. Sourced exclusively from the Capellanía vineyard, planted in 1945 at the highest point of the Ygay Estate, it spent an astonishing 252 months (21 years) in American oak barrels, followed by 67 months in concrete tanks before bottling in 2014. The result is a wine of extraordinary complexity, elegance and seemingly limitless ageing potential. Only 8,125 bottles were produced.
The 1986 harvest took place in early October under ideal conditions, allowing the Viura grapes to achieve exceptional ripeness while retaining outstanding natural acidity. Fermentation was carried out in traditional American oak vats before the wine underwent one of the longest maturation periods in modern winemaking history: 21 years in 225-litre American oak barrels, followed by nearly 6 years in concrete tanks to refine and harmonise the wine before bottling on 29 January 2014.
Drink: Now–2075+
Already one of the greatest mature white wines in existence, the exceptional balance, acidity and structure suggest it will continue to evolve gracefully for several more decades. Even the producer and critics believe it has the potential to age for another 50 years under ideal cellaring conditions.
An unforgettable wine that deserves equally exceptional cuisine:
Serving Temperature: 13–14°C
Decant: 30–60 minutes is recommended to allow the wine's remarkable aromatic complexity to fully unfold.
