A beautifully aromatic and refreshing sweet wine from the historic hills of Montalcino, Capanna Moscadello di Montalcino 2025 is produced from 100% Moscato Bianco, specifically selected from native clones preserved by the Cencioni family.
Delicately golden and intensely perfumed, the wine combines the unmistakable fragrance of Moscato with white flowers, ripe peach, apricot and citrus blossom. The palate is naturally sweet but lifted by fresh acidity, giving the wine an elegant, lively character rather than excessive richness. Capanna describes its Moscadello as intensely floral and fruity, with sweetness balanced by acidity and a characteristic aromatic finish.

Moscadello represents a fascinating alternative side of Montalcino. While the region is internationally associated with Sangiovese and Brunello, sweet aromatic Moscato wines have a long tradition in the territory, and Capanna continues to produce both a youthful Moscadello and a more concentrated Vendemmia Tardiva version.
Nose:
Intensely aromatic and immediately expressive, with orange blossom, white flowers and honeysuckle followed by ripe peach, apricot, pear and fresh Muscat grapes. Delicate citrus and honeyed nuances add complexity without diminishing the wine's freshness.
Palate:
Sweet, soft and generously fruity, with ripe peach, apricot and pear complemented by floral and citrus notes. The sweetness is balanced by refreshing acidity, preventing the wine from becoming heavy or cloying.
Structure:
Light to medium-bodied with moderate sweetness and vibrant acidity. This is a fresher, more youthful expression than Capanna's Moscadello Vendemmia Tardiva, emphasizing perfume and fruit over concentration and oak-derived complexity.
Finish:
Clean, aromatic and persistent, with lingering Moscato grapes, peach, citrus blossom and delicate honey, finishing sweet but pleasantly fresh. Capanna specifically notes the wine's characteristic Moscato aftertaste.
Capanna produces its Moscadello from 100% Moscato Bianco grown from native clones propagated through massal selection.
After harvest, the grapes receive approximately one to two days of skin maceration, helping extract additional aromatic intensity from the Moscato skins.
Fermentation then takes place in stainless steel at a very cool 12°C, preserving the grape's delicate floral and fruit aromas. Progressive filtration is used before sterile bottling, retaining natural sweetness while maintaining freshness and stability.
Unlike the estate's late-harvest Moscadello, the regular Moscadello sees no oak aging. It rests for only a few months in the bottle and is released approximately four to six months after harvest.
Moscadello provides a wonderful contrast to the powerful Sangiovese-based wines for which Montalcino is famous.
At Capanna, it forms part of a portfolio that spans Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello, Moscadello and Moscadello Vendemmia Tardiva, demonstrating that Montalcino's vinous identity extends beyond great red wines.
Capanna itself is deeply rooted in the region. The Cencioni family established the estate in 1957 in the Montosoli area north of Montalcino, and founder Giuseppe Cencioni later became one of the original founders of the Brunello di Montalcino consortium.
The 2025 Moscadello is best understood as a wine intended to capture youthful aromatic freshness rather than vintage-driven complexity.
Because Capanna releases Moscadello only four to six months after harvest, the emphasis is firmly on preserving the immediate fragrance of Moscato: flowers, fresh fruit and bright acidity.
I would therefore expect the 2025 to be particularly attractive in its first few years, when its peach, apricot, citrus and floral aromatics are at their most expressive.
Capanna Moscadello di Montalcino 2025 offers a completely different perspective on Montalcino.
Made from 100% Moscato Bianco, it is intensely aromatic, floral and fruity, with natural sweetness balanced by refreshing acidity. The combination of orange blossom, peach, apricot and fresh Muscat fruit makes it immediately appealing, while its freshness prevents it from becoming overly rich.
For customers who know Capanna primarily through its Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, this is a particularly enjoyable discovery—and an excellent reminder that Montalcino has a historic tradition of aromatic sweet wines alongside Sangiovese.
2026–2029
I would favor drinking the 2025 relatively young, while its extraordinary floral and fresh-fruit perfume remains at its peak.
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Once opened, keep refrigerated and enjoy over the following few days.
Capanna recommends its Moscadello with dry pastries and desserts, including those filled with custard or fruit, as well as ice cream.
I particularly like it with fruit tart, peach desserts, panna cotta, almond biscotti and lighter pastries. Its aromatic character also makes it pair well with fresh berries or be enjoyed well chilled after dinner.
For something very Italian, serve it with Cantucci or an almond tart.
