Capanna has been owned by the Cencioni family since 1957 and is located in Montosoli, north of Montalcino.
Nose:
Fine and perfumed, opening with rose petals, wild raspberry and dark cherry, followed by delicate nutmeg. With additional air, expect dried herbs, earth, tobacco and increasingly complex savory notes. Falstaff specifically highlights the floral character, raspberry, dark cherry and subtle nutmeg of the 2019.
Palate:
Concentrated and energetic, with dark cherry and berry fruit supported by classic Sangiovese acidity. The wine has considerable depth, gradually revealing more savory, earthy and herbal characteristics as it opens.
Structure:
Full-bodied and firmly structured, with powerful, gripping tannins and excellent freshness. Falstaff describes the tannins as hearty and grippy, with dark-berry fruit providing the core of the palate.
Finish:
Long and distinctive, with dark berries, cherry, savory herbs and spice, followed by the intriguing green-tea character identified in Falstaff’s tasting.
The 2019 vintage is particularly compelling for serious Brunello, delivering the combination of concentration, freshness and tannic structure necessary for long-term development.
Nicco 2019 received an impressive 96 points from Falstaff, whose tasting emphasized the wine’s fragrant aromatics, dark fruit and powerful tannic structure. The wine was matured for approximately 36 months in oak followed by eight months in bottle.
This is still a youthful Brunello, and the large format makes patience even more rewarding.

Large-format bottles are particularly prized by collectors because the ratio of wine to oxygen beneath the cork is greater than in a standard bottle. As a result, the wine will generally mature more slowly and gradually, helping preserve freshness while allowing tertiary complexity to develop over an extended period.

2029–2055+
Given the combination of the 2019 vintage and 3L format, I would be inclined to cellar this longer than the standard bottle or Magnum.
While it can certainly be enjoyed earlier with sufficient aeration, I would ideally begin opening Double Magnums from around 2030 onward.
With excellent storage, I would expect the wine to develop beautifully through the 2040s and potentially well into the 2050s, gradually moving from fresh cherry and flowers toward dried cherry, tobacco, leather, balsamic herbs, forest floor and truffle.
When the time comes to open it, allow several hours of slow aeration and serve around 17–18°C.
A Double Magnum deserves a table full of guests and a centerpiece dish to match.
Think Bistecca alla Fiorentina, whole roasted rack of lamb, braised beef, venison or wild boar, accompanied by porcini mushrooms, roasted vegetables or truffle.
For cheese, mature Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano Reggiano would be excellent.
