DOMAINE BITOUZET-PRIEUR MEURSAULT PREMIER CRU “CHARMES” 2024

Style Summary

A profound, beautifully structured Premier Cru Meursault, combining the natural richness of Charmes with impressive freshness, mineral tension, and remarkable length.

The 2024 is particularly compelling, showing ripe orchard fruit, citrus and white flowers alongside subtle honey, hazelnut and gentle spice. Despite the generosity associated with Charmes, the vintage brings excellent acidity and precision, giving the wine a wonderfully poised character.

The Charmes Premier Cru

Charmes is one of the most celebrated Premier Cru vineyards of Meursault, situated south of the village toward Puligny-Montrachet.

Bitouzet-Prieur owns parcels in both Charmes-Dessus and Charmes-Dessous.

The two sites complement each other beautifully: one contributes aromatic richness and a rounded, generous texture, while the other brings greater stony minerality and structure.

Most of the domaine's vines here were planted in 1944, giving the wine impressive concentration and depth.

Winemaking

The two Charmes parcels are vinified separately, then blended before bottling.

The wine undergoes approximately 16 months of élevage in Burgundy barrels, with around 25–30% new oak.

This traditional approach gives the Chardonnay additional texture and complexity while allowing the distinctive character of Charmes to remain the focus.

Tasting Profile

Nose:
White flowers, ripe pear and citrus with hints of honey, hazelnut, gentle spice and subtle oak.

Palate:
Concentrated yet beautifully poised. Ripe orchard fruit and citrus are carried by vibrant acidity, with a broad, textured mid-palate balanced by pronounced mineral tension.

Structure:
Medium to full-bodied, powerful and finely structured. The richness expected from Charmes is present, but the 2024 vintage brings particularly impressive freshness and energy.

Finish:
Long and composed, with lingering citrus, stone fruit, mineral notes and subtle spice.

Summary

Domaine Bitouzet-Prieur Meursault Premier Cru Charmes 2024 combines the generosity Meursault is celebrated for with exceptional freshness and mineral definition.

The domaine's old vines and holdings across both Charmes-Dessus and Charmes-Dessous give the wine an impressive combination of richness, finesse, and structure.

This is serious, age-worthy white Burgundy that will reward patience.

Drinking Window

Drink: 2028–2040+
Preferred Window: 2029–2037

The 2024 is still very young. While it can certainly be tasted earlier, I would ideally give this another 2–3 years in the bottle before opening.

From around 2029, the fruit, oak, and acidity should become increasingly harmonious, while the wine begins to develop the more complex characteristics of mature Meursault.

With bottle age, expect notes of:

Preserved Lemon · Baked Pear · Hazelnut · Acacia Honey · Brioche · Mineral · Gentle Spice

Well-stored bottles should continue developing beautifully through the 2030s and potentially beyond 2040.

If opening young, allow approximately 30–45 minutes in the glass or open bottle.

Serving Temperature: 11–13°C

Serve in a generous Burgundy glass, not excessively chilled.

Food Pairing

Recommended Pairings:
Osetra Caviar · Lobster · Langoustines · King Crab · Scallops · Turbot · Dover Sole · Sea Bass · Roast Chicken · Veal · Morels · Truffle · Mushroom Risotto · Comté

The Tasting Room Recommendation

A superb choice for customers looking for a serious, cellar-worthy Meursault with both richness and mineral precision.

Pair with butter-poached lobster, turbot with beurre blanc or roast chicken with morels.

For an exceptional pairing after a few years of bottle age, serve with veal, morels, and a light cream sauce, allowing the developing hazelnut and savory character of the wine to complement the dish.

Serve at approximately 12°C in a large Burgundy glass.
